Why do we lead people into risk-based social learning situations? Agency, Challenge, Choice, and Control tells a story of risk-based adventures in the social settings of education, therapy, and personal growth. This book explores many essential questions around the modality of facilitated challenge.

Such as:

  • What are we hoping our participants gain when we lead them out of the familiar and into intentional risk experiences?
  • How do participant self-perceptions influence their choices, behaviors, and outcomes?
  • What range of psychological and physiological responses can we expect to see?
  • Should participants be impelled out of their comfort zones? And if so, by whom?
  • What role do the perceptions, beliefs, and behavior of the facilitator have for the participant experience?
  • While guided by passionate facilitators with positive intentions, why do some participants thrive while others struggle, freeze, and reflect that they have failed?
  • And what of the hidden trauma that some carry, and how can we avoid activating a past wound?
  • Finally, how do we help people who end up highly emotional while facilitators and participants on the ground cheer them on to perceived shared goals?

Agency, Challenge, Choice, and Control explores all of these questions, culminating with how to use risk-based challenges to develop personal agency and control over one’s life. It prescribes the methods and processes through which individuals learn to set realistic goals, to self-regulate when struggle is unavoidable and finally the critical importance of reflection and attribution for each person to become the hero of their own adventure.

Agency, Challenge, Choice, and Control is a book like no other in this industry and promises a dramatic shift in understanding of the work we can do for the people who need our experiences the most. No more promises, it’s time that we deliver powerful and efficacious growth so that risk-based experience resonates for everyone!
